Bored with his aimless life, Richard Hannay decides to go to the theatre. While there he meets a mysterious woman named Annabella Schmidt who turns out to be a secret agent trying to save England from a mysterious foreign power. When she is murdered in his apartment, he finds himself accused and escapes to Scotland in hopes of completing her mission. On the train he meets two salesmen and a beautiful blonde named Pamela, then barely escapes the police. As they chase him across the moors, he is assisted by a farmer’s wife, reconnected with the same icy blond, hidden in an out of the way hotel, and finally forced to outsmart a team of spies in order to save England.

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theater! WCLOC closes its season with this uproarious comedy, opening on June 1st. .. or does it??

Announcing auditions for all roles in Worcester County Light Opera Company’s production of The 39 Steps!

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! WCLOC is seeking four maddeningly talented actors to portray the play’s over 150 zany characters:

Richard Hannay:
British. 30-45. Seeking an actor comfortable with the style and able to convey the quality of a 1930′s leading man. The sort that wore the pencil moustache with charm, attractive, but not rakish, pleasantly handsome.

Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret:
25-35. Seeking actress capable of presenting three versions of Hitchcock leading lady. Must have British, Scottish and German dialect.

Clown 1 and Clown 2:
Seeking two male actors, 30s-50s, who will play many roles at breakneck speed, operating as a team and with a flair for dialect, rapidly paced dialogue and physical clowning. Exceptional comic timing and improvisational ability.

Production Dates & Times

Friday nights – June 1st, 8th, and 15th – 8:00 pm
Saturday nights – June 2nd, 9th and 16th – 8:00 pm
Sunday afternoons – June 3rd, 10th, and 17th – 2:00 pm

The production will be directed by Todd Yard.

Auditions will be held March 4th, 5:30PM, March 5th, 6:30PM at The Grandview Playhouse. Auditioners will be asked to do cold readings from the script. The ability to incorporate British dialects (English RP, London, Scottish, etc.) during the audition will be a plus.

You may click on the audition form link to download the form to bring with you to the audition, though forms will be provided on the days of auditions.

Be thankful this year for fascinating and thought-provoking theater. WCLOC is proud to present its production of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s powerful Assassins. This most American and controversial of musicals lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in an historical “revusical” that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Sondheim and Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking you on a nightmarish rollercoaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet, interact and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream.
